Jacqui Smith has a slightly sideways logic. She told Adam Boulton this morning that she voted against regulating MPs’ expenses last month for the sake of her constituents. They want politicians to be getting on with the job, not fussing over figures, she said.

True, but if MPs’ lavish lifestyles, which are funded by the tax payer, were reigned in savings of literally hundreds of thousands of pounds would be made.

If MPs used even just £15,000 of the £60,000 they are currently given to run their office on employing a part time accounts manager, their current staff could get on with the job as Jacqui says.

Furthermore, they could do this job for a pittance of what they are doing it for at the moment, without running amuck with money they have no legitimate entitlement to.
